KANPUR: A 32-year-old woman, who was eight months pregnant, was allegedly hacked to death by her drunk husband with a sickle in Mahoba district late Saturday. The accused allegedly tried to mislead police by claiming an unidentified person had killed his wife, but his five-year-old son, who witnessed the murder, exposed the lie.Police said the incident took place in Bijrari village under the Panwadi police station area. The accused, Hanif (35), was taken into custody after his version was contradicted by the couple’s son and during police questioning.Police said Hanif lived in Bijrari village with his wife, Manisha Mansuri, and their two children. Late on Saturday, he allegedly returned home heavily intoxicated and began arguing with his wife over an issue.

When Manisha objected, he allegedly lost control and repeatedly attacked her on the head and neck with a sickle kept nearby, killing her on the spot.After the incident, Hanif allegedly dialled 112 and falsely claimed that an unidentified person had killed his wife. Station House Officer Praveen Kumar Singh reached the spot and began the investigation, during which the couple’s son revealed what had actually happened.Rafiq Mansuri, the deceased’s brother and a resident of Chikasi in Hamirpur district, said Manisha married Hanif in 2021 and had been subjected to continuous harassment over dowry demands and his alcohol addiction.He alleged that Hanif had sold 2.5 bighas of his four bighas of land to fund his drinking habit. Rafiq said the family had lodged a case against Hanif in 2024, following which Manisha stayed at her parental home for nine months. She later returned to her matrimonial home after assurances of reform and a mutual settlement, but her husband’s violent behaviour allegedly continued.Villagers described Hanif as erratic and quarrelsome, saying most people in the village kept their distance from him. Police said he made several attempts to mislead investigators, but questioning, the evidence at the scene and the child’s testimony exposed his alleged attempt to fabricate the story.Circle Officer Kulpahar Anurudh Singh said the accused had been taken into custody and the body sent for postmortem. “Further strict legal action is being taken on the basis of forensic evidence and the post-mortem report,” the officer said.
