An umpire makes decisions on the field, such as dismissals, no-balls, wides and other playing conditions. A match referee works off the field and is responsible for maintaining the spirit of the game, enforcing the ICC Code of Conduct, and overseeing the smooth running of the match.
Officiating in Test cricket for many years is a remarkable achievement. It requires consistency, accuracy, fitness, and the trust of the ICC. Only a few officials have managed to officiate in more than 100 Test matches.
