NEW DELHI: Congress MP Deepender Hooda on Tuesday urged the Centre to consider Haryana as the host or co-host of the 2030 Commonwealth Games, arguing that the state deserves the opportunity in view of its athletes’ consistent contribution to India’s medal tally.Welcoming India’s chance to host the Games, Hooda said Haryana has accounted for more than half of India’s medals at major international sporting events over the past 15-20 years and should therefore be the primary beneficiary of investments in sports infrastructure.“We are happy that India is getting a chance to host the Commonwealth Games. Now I urge the government to choose Haryana as the state where those games are to be hosted. Over the last 15-20 years, Haryana is the state which has brought home over 50 per cent of India’s medals in major competitions. If lakhs of crores are going to be spent on developing sports infrastructure in a particular part of our country, it should be Haryana because Haryana’s players have proven it,” Hooda told news agency ANI.He also took a swipe at the BJP-led Centre, alleging that major projects were being concentrated in Gujarat. Hooda said the government should follow “Raj Dharma” by treating every state equally instead of favouring one state.“India should be the number one country in the Commonwealth Games 2030. In the interest of the nation, Haryana should be considered, if not the host, at least the co-host. There is a thing called Raj Dharma, where every state is equal. The government should follow that. They are following Rajya Dharma,” he said.India finished fourth in the medal standings at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, winning 39 medals, including 13 gold, 17 silver and nine bronze. Ahmedabad was confirmed as the host city for the 2030 Commonwealth Games by Commonwealth Sport in November last year.(With ANI inputs)
