'The Odyssey' crosses USD 1 BILLION; becomes Christopher Nolan's first film since 'The Dark Knight Rises' to hit box office milestone

Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ has officially crossed the USD 1 billion mark at the worldwide box office, thus becoming the fifth movie of 2026 to reach the milestone. The film has also become the Oscar-winning filmmaker’s first billion-dollar blockbuster since 2012’s ‘The Dark Knight Rises’.

The Odyssey box office collections

As per reports on Variety, The Odyssey officially crossed the USD 1 billion mark, after just three weeks in theatres. The film starring Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway in lead roles, has grossed approximately USD 429.65 million in North America and USD 578.8 million internationally, taking its worldwide haul to around USD 1.008 billion.

Nolan to beat his own box-office record

The Odyssey is just inches away from setting a new personal box office high for Nolan. The film is within reach of The Dark Knight’s lifetime worldwide haul of approximately USD 1.08 billion.It will also rank among the highest-earning R-rated films of all time.

IMAX proves to be a huge part of the journey

A significant portion of The Odyssey’s box-office haul has come from premium formats, particularly IMAX, which has recorded an estimated USD 257 million, putting it on course to challenge Avatar’s approximately USD 270 million IMAX record.

China could give ‘The Odyssey’ another boost

With the film already in the billion-dollar club, the film can look forward to extending its record with the upcoming China release on August 14.

The fifth billion-dollar film of 2026

The Odyssey now among the five films of 2026 that have successfully crossed the USD 1 billion worldwide. These films include, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ which earned approximately USD 1.18 billion in its first week, ‘Toy Story 5’ which earned approximately USD 1.067 billion. ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’, which raked in an estimated USD 1.001 billion and the biopic ‘Michael’ earning USD 1.001 billion.
