One discussed moment was a scene in ‘Karuppu’ where a character appears to ask for three tickets for ‘Mookuthi Amman.’ Speaking at Spotify’s ‘Pacha Satta – The Resurgence’ event, RJ Balaji clarified that the scene was intentionally included as a reference to his own film. “There is a scene where they ask for three tickets for Mookuthi Amman. That was a logical mistake. But that film was not released in theatres. I knew that myself. If I had used another director’s film, they might have wondered why I was making fun of their film. So, to avoid any trouble, I used my own film,” he said. He also spoke about some visual effects in the film, admitting that four shots around the interval were not up to the expected standard initially. The filmmaker added with humour that the budget also played a role in how the climax was executed.
RJ Balaji reveals ‘Kantara ‘ inspiration behind ‘Karuppu’ climax
RJ Balaji also revealed that the climax of ‘Karuppu’ was influenced by his experience watching ‘Kantara’ in a theatre. He recalled how audiences were completely absorbed while watching the divine sequence in the film. “When I watched Kantara in a theatre, everyone there was completely mesmerised by that one scene. I wondered why we should not do something similar with a deity from our own land,” he explained. According to Balaji, the idea eventually became part of ‘Karuppu.‘ “That is what inspired us to add this climax. Other than that, we did not add anything extra to the story. Everything was already there when we wrote it,” he added. He also revealed that the team decided early on to combine the action sequences with songs since the film did not have many conventional dance numbers.
