Batwara 1947 box office collection day 1: The Independence Day weekend is the perfect time to release a patriotic Sunny Deol film. In the recent past, a patriotic holiday has worked for Gadar 2 and Border 2. The makers of Batwara 1947, the actor’s Partition-era drama, were probably encouraged by this. What they did not count on was the Emraan Hashmi renaissance. In the end, Batwara 1947 was blanked by Awarapan 2 at the box office, earning just 25% of what the Emraan-starrer made on the same day.

Batwara 1947 was always trailing in this box-office clash. The film has earned only ₹1.76 crore in advance bookings for day 1, trailing Awarapan’s impressive figure of ₹8+ crore. On the release day, the same trend continued. Despite favourable reviews and praise for Sunny Deol and Shabana Azmi’s performances, Batwara 1947 could not gather enough momentum at the ticket window. According to Sacnilk, the film opened at ₹5.75 crore net in India, much lower than the ₹21 crore Awarapan 2 managed on the same day. It is the lowest-opening solo Sunny Deol film since his 2018 box-office dud Bhaiaji Superhit, which opened at just ₹1 crore. Border 2 and Gadar 2 had opened at ₹32 crore and ₹40 crore, respectively, signifying a dramatic return to box-office glory for the actor in his late 60s.

Batwara 1947 and Awarapan 2 shared the screens across India neatly, with both films getting almost the same number of shows nationwide. But the Sunny Deol-starrer registered rather low turnout. Its occupancy levels were dismal at 7-12% for the day shows, rising to a somewhat respectable 25% for the night shows. In comparison, the night shows of Awarapan 2 had a 75% occupancy rate.

In Batwara 1947, Sunny Deol plays a Muslim man who migrates to Pakistan during the Partition. However, he discovers a Hindu woman, played by Shabana Azmi, living upstairs in his home, who refuses to leave. He takes it upon himself to protect her while also ensuring his family’s safety amid the chaos. Batwara 1947 sees Preity Zinta return to the big screen after almost a decade. The film also marks the first on-screen collaboration between Sunny and his son, Karan Deol, who plays his son. The cast also includes Ali Fazal, Abhimanyu Singh, Khushi Hajare, and Kanikka Kapur.
