Thalapathy Vijay’s ‘Jana Nayagan’ gets relief ahead of OTT release, HC Bench closes major case

As ‘Jana Nayagan’ prepares for its digital debut, the Vijay-starrer has received important legal relief. The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court closed a case alleging the film portrayed Papapatti village incorrectly. The development comes just days before the film’s scheduled OTT release, removing a legal issue that had drawn attention to the movie.

Madras High Court rejects plea over Papapatti Village portrayal

According to News 18, the case was filed by M Chinnasamy, a resident of Papapatti village, who claimed the place was shown negatively or incorrectly in ‘Jana Nayagan.’ The matter came before a bench comprising Justices Karthikeyan and Sakthivel at the Madurai Bench. During the hearing, the film’s production team clarified that the village shown in the movie was not named Papapatti. The counsel representing the production company told the court that the film referred to the location as “Papampatti” and not Papapatti. Following the explanation, the court closed the case.

Court says fiction cannot be completely avoided in films

The hearing also touched upon another point linked to the film’s trailer. The judges referred to a scene in which an MLA is shown being tied up and beaten with a whip. They questioned whether every MLA could approach the court seeking removal of such a scene simply because the character was shown that way. The judges observed that completely separating fiction from real-world references is not always possible in cinema. Taking these aspects into consideration, the Madurai Bench decided to close the petition. The order gives ‘Jana Nayagan’ some relief as it moves towards its next stage of release.
