An 18 year old in Georgia has been arrested and charged after her boyfriend allegedly severely beat her 2-year-old son, who later died from his injuries. The Canton Police Department responded to a report of an unresponsive child at a residence on Cartersville Street at around 11.29 am (local time) on August 3, according to police. The child was taken to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. In the days that followed, Canton police detectives interviewed 22-year-old Celso Edison Vicente Y Vicente, who was identified as the live-in boyfriend of the toddler’s 18-year-old mother, Devorah Diaz Perez.According to arrest warrants cited by local media, Vicente Y Vicente was responsible for caring for the child on the day of his death and allegedly struck and “severely beat” him with his hands and other unidentified objects. He was arrested around 7 pm (local time) that day and charged with malice murder and first-degree cruelty to children. He remains in custody at the Cherokee County Adult Detention Center, as cited by the People.More than two weeks after the toddler’s death, police also arrested Diaz Perez after detectives determined there was probable cause to charge her with second-degree murder, two counts of second-degree cruelty to children and three counts of reckless conduct. She was taken into custody and booked into the Cherokee County Adult Detention Center.“The death of a child is heartbreaking, and our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragic loss,” Canton Police Chief Marty Ferrell was quoted as saying by the People.“Our detectives have worked diligently to conduct a thorough and professional investigation. We remain committed to protecting the integrity of this case and allowing the judicial process to move forward.”The Georgia Bureau of Investigation Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to determine the child’s official cause and manner of death.
