Tempers flared minutes before the eventual call of stumps on Day 2 of the second Test between India and Sri Lanka. The hosts weren’t pleased with how the umpires let the play go on despite the light fading in Colombo, and eventually, Sri Lanka paid the price as Prabath Jayasuriya was trapped by Manav Suthar in what turned out to be the final over of the day. The incident started before the second over of Sri Lanka’s innings when Jayasuriya was just about to take strike against Suthar.
The on-field umpires, Ahsan Raza and Sharfuddoula Saikat, took the light reading but deemed it fit for play to continue, provided India employed spinners and took the pacers out of the attack. Shubman Gill then introduced Suthar into the attack.
However, as Suthar was getting ready, both Sri Lankan batters Jayasuriya and Kamil Mishara made their displeasure known to the officials. And eventually, the Sri Lankan nightwatchman lost his wicket on the eventual final ball of the day as Suthar trapped him in front of the wicket.

As Jayasuriya was walking back to the pavilion, he continuously looked behind, miffed at the umpires. After reaching the dressing room, he flung his gloves, as the Sri Lankan camp was clearly “disgruntled,” as Sanjay Manjrekar, who was on air at the time, described. The ball to dismiss the nightwatchman turned out to be the final ball of the day as umpires took the players off for bad light.
“Just look at Prabath Jayasuriya, there is steam coming out of his ears,” said Manjrekar on the Sony Sports Network.
Eventually, Sri Lanka ended Day 2 at 8/2, still trailing India by 495 runs. For the visitors, Prasidh Krishna and Suthar took one wicket each.
India dominate Sri Lanka
India declared their first innings at 503/9. Dhruv Jurel was the top performer on the second day, hitting his second Test century. Devdutt Padikkal and Jurel were the two centurions for India as the visitors piled on more than 500 runs. For India, Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant hit fifties while Ravindra Jadeja chipped in with a 43-run knock. For Sri Lanka, Asitha Fernando was the top performer for Sri Lanka, returning with four wickets.
Rain also made its presence felt on the second day, and the play was halted for more than an hour. However, the late strikes led to India calling the shots in the Test match.
