Ashoke Pandit confirms Kuku Kohli’s death
Fellow filmmaker and close friend Ashoke Pandit confirmed the news of Kuku Kohli’s death on August 25, announcing it through an Instagram post. Paying tribute to his friend, he wrote, “My heart is breaking as I announce the passing of filmmaker Kuku Kohli. Today, I have lost a great friend and a great filmmaker.” Speaking to Hindustan Times, Pandit revealed that Kohli had no prior health issues and that his death came as a sudden shock, triggered by a heart attack. “He had no illness, it was a massive heart attack,” he said, adding that Kohli had been “hale and hearty” right up until his unexpected passing.
Karishma Kohli’s family background
Kuku Kohli, born Avtar Kohli, tied the knot with veteran actress Aruna Irani in 1990, marking his second marriage, the couple did not have any children of their own. From his first marriage to Rita Kohli, Kohli had two daughters, Pooja and Karishma, with Karishma going on to follow in her father’s footsteps as a filmmaker herself.

Spanning over three decades in Hindi cinema, Kuku Kohli built a career as a filmmaker, writer and screenwriter, best remembered for introducing Ajay Devgn to Bollywood through his 1991 directorial debut, ‘Phool Aur Kaante’, a film that went on to become a major hit. He subsequently helmed several other films, including ‘Suhaag’, ‘Haqeeqat’, ‘Kohraam’, ‘Zulmi’, ‘Anari No. 1’, ‘Yeh Dil Aashiqanaa’ and ‘Woh Tera Naam Tha’.
