US President Donald Trump on Thursday warned Prime Minister Mark Carney against making him an “enemy”, saying such a stance could hurt Canada’s economy and prove politically damaging.Sharing a post on Truth Social, Trump said, “It is very good for Canadian Politicians like Prime Minister Carney to make President Donald J Trump “the enemy,” until their Economy collapses, then it will prove to be very bad for Politics — Worse than anything that has ever happened to a Canadian Politician. Just watch!”Trump’s warning came as tensions between Washington and Ottawa continue to rise amid a trade dispute and disagreements over the two countries’ economic relationship.Earlier on Thursday, Carney said Canada was ready to negotiate a trade agreement with the US, but stressed that any deal must provide stability and credibility.“The deal that’s possible, that’s in the interests of Canadian workers, families and businesses, is also the deal that is in the interests of American families, American businesses, American consumers, and … we’re ready to sit down and strike that deal when the Americans are ready,” Carney told reporters in Thunder Bay, Ontario.Carney also announced a C$4.7 billion ($3.41 billion) investment to build and maintain VIA Rail passenger cars in Canada, marking the first time in four decades that the company’s cars will be manufactured domestically.“For the first time in four decades, VIA’s passenger cars will be produced and assembled in Canada. Cars that used to be built in the United States will be built right here in Thunder Bay at Alstom Canada,” Carney said.The announcement came amid an escalating trade dispute between the two countries. Canada is set to impose retaliatory tariffs on about $20 billion worth of US imports from September 8, in response to tariffs imposed by the Trump administration.The latest exchange between Trump and Carney follows a series of disagreements between the two leaders over trade and other issues.Earlier this week, Carney had criticised the Trump administration’s approach to the trade dispute, telling Washington to “stop doing memes, stop throwing shade and stop trying to be tough,” while saying talks could resume if the US became serious about negotiations.The trade tensions have also spilled into a separate dispute over the name of Lake Ontario. Trump on Wednesday said the renaming of the lake to “Lake America” was “complete, ratified, and binding” after Apple Maps adopted the name for users in the US.In a Truth Social post, Trump said, “Apple Maps has just announced that it has changed the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America, so now that very important change of names, between Google Maps and Apple Maps, is complete, ratified, and binding. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”Google Maps had earlier adopted “Lake America” for users in the US following a change by the US Geographic Names Information System (GNIS). Google said users in Canada would continue to see “Lake Ontario”, while users elsewhere would see both names.The US executive order behind the change applies to American federal agencies and does not have authority over Canadian territory or international naming standards. Lake Ontario is shared by Canada and the US.The move has drawn strong opposition in Canada. Ontario Premier Doug Ford unveiled a sign along the Canadian shore reading “Lake Ontario. Now and Always” in English and French.Carney has also rejected Trump’s move, saying Canadians would continue to call it Lake Ontario. “Canadians also know that naming reality means calling it Lake Ontario – then, now and always,” Carney said on social media.
