How many times have you postponed a goal while waiting for the “right moment” — the moment when you finally stop feeling nervous or afraid? It is a common misconception that courage means being completely free of fear. However, according to Jada Pinkett Smith, true bravery lies in choosing to move forward even when fear and self-doubt are still present. Drawing from her own experiences, Smith has spoken about the importance of confronting fear rather than waiting for it to disappear. Her words offer a reminder that courage is not about feeling fearless; it is about finding the strength to take action despite being afraid. The quote from Jada Pinkett Smith reads, “It’s not about NOT being scared when you need to move past fear. It’s about finding the courage to freaking do it anyway, even if you don’t think you can.”

What does the quote mean?

Smith shared these words in her 2023 memoir, ‘Worthy’, while recalling her experience of starring in the 2004 film ‘Collateral’ alongside Tom Cruise. She wrote about an occasion when Cruise offered her a ride on his motorcycle. Smith initially backed out because she was scared, but eventually decided to accept the opportunity as a way of confronting her fear. Rooted in that personal experience, Smith’s words challenge the common perception that brave people do not experience fear. Instead, the quote presents courage as the ability to acknowledge fear while refusing to let it dictate your actions.Fear can arise in countless situations, whether it is starting a new job, taking a leap of faith, travelling somewhere unfamiliar or taking a chance on a relationship. In each of these situations, people can find themselves waiting for their anxiety or uncertainty to disappear before making a decision.Smith’s perspective suggests that waiting for fear to completely subside can become a trap. The opportunity may pass while you are waiting to feel ready. You do not necessarily need absolute confidence or a guarantee of success to take the first step. Sometimes, courage simply means trusting yourself enough to move forward despite the possibility of failure or discomfort. The idea is particularly relevant because fear and confidence can exist at the same time. You can be nervous about an outcome and still choose to act. You can question your abilities and still give yourself a chance. For Smith, bravery is not about suppressing those emotions but recognising them and refusing to be controlled by them.Ultimately, her message is simple: you do not have to stop being afraid before you can be brave. Sometimes, being brave means acknowledging that your instincts are telling you to step back, recognising the possibility of failure or discomfort, and choosing to move forward anyway.
