When Bill Gates started constructing his Median estate, famously known as Xanadu 2.0, in 1990, he encountered an unexpected challenge: the northen spotted owl crises. The mansion, designed in Pacific Lodge style and sprawling across 66,000 square feet, was initially planned to use old‑growth timber. But with the owl listed as a threatened species, America banned the use of wood from old‑growth habitats. Architect James Cutler, known for his environmental stance, also opposed felling living old‑growth trees.Instead of pushing through, Gates compromised. He funded what Cutler described as the world’s first heavy‑timber‑recycling sawmill, sourcing reclaimed wood through Ferndale‑based G.R. Plume & Company. Half a million board feet of salvaged Douglas fir beams from Long‑Bell Lumber Company’s 1920s sheds in Longview, Washington, were repurposed for the mansion. Some beams stretched over 75 feet, arriving weathered, studded with nails, and requiring extensive labor to re‑grade and remanufacture.

Building a billionaire’s dream home

Gates purchased the land for his Medina property in 1988 for $2 million, and the following year ran an international architectural competition to find the right team to design it. Construction on the sprawling 66,000-square-foot Pacific Lodge-style home, later known as Xanadu 2.0, began in 1990 under architects James Cutler and Peter Bohlin. The original plan called for vast quantities of timber, much of it expected to come from some of the finest old-growth trees still standing.That plan ran headfirst into a national environmental reckoning. Around the same time construction began, the discovery of the threatened northern spotted owl triggered sweeping restrictions on logging old-growth forest habitat across the country. Cutler, known as one of the most environmentally committed architects in the Pacific Northwest, was firmly opposed to felling living old-growth trees for the project regardless of the restrictions.

A billionaire chooses to compromise

Rather than push back or seek workarounds, Gates opted to change course entirely. Cutler had been introduced to a Duluth-based salvaged-lumber dealer named Max Talbert, who suggested an alternative: building the mansion from reclaimed wood instead of freshly cut timber. Gates agreed, and went further than simply sourcing the material — he invested millions into a reclaimed-timber operation tied to Ferndale-based G.R. Plume & Company, according to a report in Architectural Record. In the process, Gates helped fund what Cutler described as the world’s first heavy-timber-recycling sawmill, effectively catalyzing an entirely new market for salvaged structural lumber.

Half a million board Feet of reclaimed history

The wood that ultimately went into Xanadu 2.0 had a history of its own. It came from Long-Bell Lumber Company work sheds built in the 1920s in Longview, Washington, which had sat empty for nearly four decades before finally coming down in 1996. Roughly half a million board feet of timber from those sheds made its way into the Medina mansion, including reclaimed Douglas fir beams stretching more than 75 feet long. The salvaged material arrived in rough shape — weathered, inconsistently sized, studded with old nails, bolts, and spikes, and carrying no formal grading stamp.None of that made it a cheap shortcut. Reclaimed wood of this kind typically costs roughly three times more than standard timber, given the labor involved in de-nailing each piece, scanning for hidden metal, re-grading the material, and remanufacturing it into columns, beams, and trusses precise enough to meet architectural tolerances.

An early signal of Bill Gates’s environmental streak

At the time, sourcing an entire mansion’s structural timber from reclaimed material at this scale was highly unusual. What began as a workaround for one high-profile home has since become an established practice across the architecture and hospitality industries, with hotel groups, restaurant designers, and high-end residential architects now routinely trading on reclaimed structural timber as a premium building material.In hindsight, the decision reads as an early marker of the environmental interests Gates would later pursue on a much larger scale — backing dozens of climate ventures through Breakthrough Energy Ventures, founding advanced nuclear energy company TerraPower, and commissioning Breakthrough, the world’s first hydrogen-powered superyacht. Gates’s $132 million Xanadu 2.0 today stands, quite literally, on timber salvaged because of a small, threatened owl species barely larger than a house cat — a detail that set off a chain of consequences few could have predicted at the time.
