India captain Shubman Gill has entered the ODI record books by becoming only the second batter to score two double centuries in the format. The 27-year-old had scored his first ODI double century against New Zealand in Hyderabad in January 2023. He added another one against West Indies at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati. Chasing a huge target of 406 runs, Gill took charge of the innings from the beginning. He reached his century in just 62 balls and shared a 255-run opening partnership with Rohit Sharma.
It became the second-highest partnership by an Indian opening pair in ODI cricket. Rohit was dismissed after scoring 101 runs from 75 balls, but Gill continued his aggressive approach. He completed his second ODI double century in only 117 balls and kept India firmly in the chase.
Rohit Sharma remains the only batter with three ODI double centuries. He scored two against Sri Lanka in 2014 and 2017, while his other double century came against Australia in 2013. Gill now has two and will have the chance to break Rohit’s record if he continues his current form.
Gill Breaks Ishan Kishan’s Fastest 150 Record
Gill also broke Ishan Kishan’s record for the fastest 150 in ODI cricket. Kishan had reached the mark in 103 balls against Bangladesh in 2022, while Gill completed his 150 in just 89 balls against West Indies. Gill looked in complete control throughout his innings and continued to attack the West Indies bowlers.
Even after Rohit’s dismissal, he kept the pressure on the opposition. After Rohit returned to the pavilion, Gill added 65 runs from 35 balls with Virat Kohli. Kohli also played an aggressive innings but was dismissed for 29 runs from 19 balls while trying to hit a boundary towards the third-man region.
Sherfane Rutherford completed a good catch to end his innings. Gill continued his charge and took India closer to the 406-run target. If India complete the chase, it will become their highest successful run chase in ODI cricket and the second-highest successful chase in the format. South Africa’s 435-run chase against Australia remains the highest.
