After the strong response to Matka King Season 1, Prime Video has officially renewed the show for a second season. Starring Vijay Varma in the lead role, the crime drama became one of the platform’s biggest streaming successes in recent years. Announcing the renewal on social media, the OTT platform hinted that the next season would be even bigger, leaving fans excited about what lies ahead.

Matka King renewed for season 2
On Thursday, Prime Video shared a new poster featuring Vijay Varma holding playing cards with the number “2” on them. Along with the poster, the streaming platform wrote, “Shuffling the cards for season 2.” The announcement comes after the impressive performance of Season 1. According to Prime Video, the series became the most-watched new scripted show on the platform in the last two years. It also trended in the Top 10 across 37 countries and reached the number one spot in 17 countries within its opening week.
Several celebrities reacted to the announcement. Vidya Balan expressed her excitement in the comments section and wrote, “Yayyyyyyy,” along with dancing emojis. Fans also flooded social media with reactions. One user commented, “Bring it soon please.” Another wrote, “This isn’t a series anymore, it’s VV’s kingdom now.” A fan also added, “Wow! Thanks for renewing it for Season 2! We’re all excited.”
About Matka King Season 1
Set in 1960s Mumbai, the first season of Matka King revolved around an ambitious cotton trader who dreams of earning respect and legitimacy. He goes on to create a new gambling game called ‘Matka’, which soon takes over the city and changes a business that was once limited to the wealthy and influential.
The show received positive reviews from both critics and audiences. Vijay Varma’s performance in particular was praised by viewers as well as celebrities including Anil Kapoor, Aamir Khan, Vicky Kaushal and Karan Johar.
The series was created and written by Abhay Koranne, while Nagraj Popatrao Manjule served as creator, writer and director. Season 1 was produced by Siddharth Roy Kapur, Nagraj Popatrao Manjule, Gargi Kulkarni, Ashwini Sidwani and Ashish Aryan under the banners of Roy Kapur Films, Aatpat and SMR Entertainment.
Alongside Vijay Varma, the series also starred Kritika Kamra, Sai Tamhankar, Siddharth Jadhav, Bhupendra Jadawat and Gulshan Grover in important roles. The ensemble cast further included Bharat Jadhav, Girish Kulkarni, Jamie Lever, Kishor Kadam, Cyrus Sahukar, Arpita Sethiya, Sambhaji Tangade, Ishtiyak Khan, Sanjivv Jotangia and Simran Ashwini.
