Muted dialogues, blurred religious visuals: Antony Starr-starrer The Boys season 5 gets heavily edited in India

The final season of the hit web series The Boys has officially premiered on Prime Video in India, but viewers quickly noticed that the local version appears significantly toned down. Despite the show carrying an adult rating, several fans on Reddit and X (formerly Twitter) pointed out multiple edits involving muted dialogues, blurred visuals, and trimmed sequences that allegedly alter parts of the creator’s intended version.

What Happens in The Boys Season 5?

The new season plunges deeper into chaos as Homelander tightens his grip over America through fear, propaganda, and authoritarian control. With ‘Freedom Camps’ being used to silence dissenters and consolidate power around the White House, the resistance led by Annie January struggles to stay afloat.

Meanwhile, Billy Butcher returns with a devastating plan involving a virus capable of eliminating every person carrying Compound V. As Butcher races to obtain the original V1 strain, the stakes escalate further with the return of a furious and unpredictable Soldier Boy.

Scenes Indian Viewers Say Were Censored

A large chunk of the edits reportedly target scenes containing religious satire or graphic imagery.

In Episode 1, titled Fifteen Inches of Sheer Dynamite, Sister Sage, played by Susan Heyward, responds to Oh-Father (Daveed Diggs) during a conversation about religion. Indian viewers noticed that specific words from her dialogue were muted, while the subtitles replaced them with ellipses.

Episode 2, Teenage Kix, also appears to feature trimmed visuals during a disturbing virus-testing sequence. The Indian version switches to wider shots to avoid showing explicit biological details involving the test subjects.

Another widely discussed edit comes in Episode 5, One Shots, where Firecracker, played by Valorie Curry, throws a Jesus figurine into a bin during a symbolic moment tied to Homelander’s ideology. The figurine has been digitally blurred in the Indian release. The same episode allegedly censors a line delivered by Homelander during a speech in which he dismisses the idea of being a prophet. ”Prophets are servants,” the line has been censored.

In Episode 6, King of Hell, portions of a particularly violent massacre sequence involving Black Noir II and The Deep appear shortened to reduce graphic close-up shots.

Fans Question ‘Selective’ Censorship

The edits have triggered strong reactions online, with many viewers questioning why the streaming platform would alter scenes so heavily, which is already adult-rated. Several fans argued that subscribers should have access to the original creative vision rather than a modified regional cut.

Others pointed out what they called the irony of graphic violence largely remaining intact while religious satire and even toy-like figurines were blurred or muted. Some eagle-eyed viewers also claimed that uncensored production stills can still be spotted through the platform’s X-Ray trivia feature, indirectly revealing what may have been edited out from the final stream.

Cast and Release Schedule

The Boys features an ensemble cast including Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Antony Starr, Erin Moriarty, Jessie T. Usher, Laz Alonso, Chace Crawford, Tomer Capone, Karen Fukuhara, Nathan Mitchell, and Colby Minifie in pivotal roles.

New episodes are dropping weekly every Wednesday, leading up to the finale on May 13. The series is currently streaming in English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada.
