Meta’s highest-paid employee Alexandr Wang has reportedly signaled how the company plans to compete with rivals such as OpenAI, Anthropic and Google in the AI race. In a recent interview, Alexandr Wang said that the future Meta AI models will stand out because of their health-related capabilities. Speaking at the Bloomberg Tech conference in San Francisco, Wang said health will play a major role as Meta develops larger and more advanced AI models. “Health is an area that we view as really critical as we scale these models out to billions,” he said, giving a glimpse into Meta’s AI strategy as the social media giant aims to differentiate its models from offerings by ChatGPT, Claude and Google’s Gemini. For those unaware, Wang joined Meta in 2025 following the company’s $14 billion investment in Scale AI. He now leads Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL), the unit overseeing the company’s next-generation AI efforts.

Meta bets on health-focused AI

According to Alexandr Wang, health capabilities have emerged as one of the strongest areas for Meta’s latest AI model, Muse Spark. The model was released in April and marked the first major AI launch from Meta Superintelligence Labs since CEO Mark Zuckerberg began overhauling the company’s AI division.Wang acknowledged that Muse Spark is “not at the tier of the leading frontier models” such as Anthropic’s Claude and OpenAI’s ChatGPT. However, he added that the model performed “better, frankly, than we expected internally.”He said Meta expects future versions to become increasingly competitive and that health will remain a key focus area. The company is also exploring ways to integrate these capabilities into consumer products such as Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.Health has become one of the most closely watched opportunities in the AI industry. Many users Wang also revealed that Muse Spark raised biological-risk concerns during development, though he did not provide details. He said Meta addressed those risks before releasing the model. The findings also influenced the company’s decision not to release Muse Spark as an open-source model, which would have made its core technology broadly available to developers.
