AMBALA: A four-year-old boy fell into a 220-foot-deep borewell in Dhanaura village of Barara in Ambala district on Tuesday morning, officials said.The child, identified as Nirbhay, had accompanied his father to the fields to deliver food to his grandfather when the incident occurred, according to news agency PTI.According to officials, Nirbhay was playing near the field when he accidentally slipped into the open borewell. After receiving information about the incident, deputy commissioner Ajay Singh Tomar and other administrative officials reached the spot.Rescue operations were launched by teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and the Army.DC Tomar said the incident took place around 6.30 am and noted that the borewell has a diameter of about 9 inches.The NDRF reached the site with specialised equipment, while assistance from the Army was also sought. The rescue operation was continuing at the time of filing this report.Family members said Nirbhay’s grandfather, Karnail Singh, had left for the fields early in the morning. Later, Nirbhay’s father, Manjit, went to deliver food to him. Nirbhay insisted on accompanying his father, and Manjit agreed.After reaching the field, Manjit began working while Karnail Singh started eating. Nirbhay, who was sitting near his grandfather, soon started playing nearby.According to the family, the child noticed the open borewell and began throwing soil into it. The area around the borewell was wet, and he is believed to have slipped while looking inside.Manjit said they heard a loud sound and immediately rushed towards the borewell. They called out for Nirbhay and realised he had fallen inside.The child’s father, grandfather and local residents initially tried to rescue him on their own. When their efforts failed, they informed the authorities at around 7.30 am.
