Cricket Australia (CA) CEO Todd Greenberg said the idea of holding an Ashes Test in India could be considered in the future to help grow interest in Test cricket. While he made it clear that there are no current plans, Greenberg said Cricket Australia is willing to keep all options open.
“Our relationship with the ECB but also the BCCI is very strong, and clearly there are opportunities in India to put more content into certain areas,” Greenberg told BBC’s Stumped podcast.
“It’s not something we’re currently planning, but it would be certainly open to consideration.
“I think Test cricket between us, England and India is still very strong, probably bucking the trend as to other parts of the world. So we want to make sure we continue to grow it and strengthen it.”

The comments came shortly after it was confirmed that the Big Bash League (BBL) will begin its first-ever season in India later this year. The opening match will be played at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium, where the Melbourne Renegades will take on the Perth Scorchers. Greenberg, however, acknowledged the hurdles that a packed cricketing calendar presents even for a one-off game, in light of multiple ICC events, franchise and bilateral cricket.
“The challenge for all of us in global cricket is there’s only 365 days in a schedule and we probably need another month or two [to] generate some of the content that we’re trying to,” he said.
The Ashes, one of the oldest and most famous rivalries in Test cricket, has been played since 1877. On Thursday, the schedule for the 2027 men’s and women’s Ashes series was announced, with both set to be held at the same time in England. The first-ever Mixed Disability Ashes will also be played alongside the two series.
