Mumbai Indians have a strong group of big-name players, including Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya. However, their IPL 2026 season showed that the squad still needs more depth. MI missed the playoffs after injuries affected their campaign.
Here are five areas Mumbai Indians could look to improve before IPL 2027.
1. Another Indian Fast Bowler
MI already have Jasprit Bumrah, Deepak Chahar and other pace options. But another good Indian fast bowler could make the attack stronger.
This would give MI more cover if a key bowler gets injured or needs a break.
| Area | Current Options | What MI Need |
|---|---|---|
| Fast bowling | Bumrah, Deepak Chahar | Another reliable Indian pacer |
| New ball | Bumrah, Chahar | More backup |
| Death overs | Bumrah | Another option |
2. A Strong Middle-Order Batter
MI have Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma in the middle order. Hardik Pandya can also contribute with the bat. Still, another reliable middle-order batter could give MI more depth. The player should be able to score quickly and handle both pace and spin.
3. Another Quality Spinner
Mitchell Santner and Mayank Markande give MI spin options. The team also has other bowling choices in the squad.
However, another wicket-taking spinner could help MI on slow pitches. It would also give the captain more choices during the middle overs.
4. A Young Indian Wicketkeeper
MI have wicketkeeping options such as Ryan Rickelton and Robin Minz. But adding another young Indian wicketkeeper could be useful for the future. An Indian wicketkeeper would also give MI more flexibility when selecting their four overseas players.
5. Better Backup Options
One of MI’s biggest needs is stronger backup players. Their 2026 season was affected by injuries to important players. Rohit Sharma missed six matches, while Hardik Pandya and Mitchell Santner also missed games.
MI can therefore look for young Indian players who can fill different roles.
MI’s Five Key Gaps
| No. | Squad Gap | Why They Need It |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Indian fast bowler | More pace options |
| 2 | Middle-order batter | More batting depth |
| 3 | Quality spinner | Better spin attack |
| 4 | Young wicketkeeper | Future backup |
| 5 | Strong bench | Better cover for injuries |
