The IPL 2026 playoff race is heating up, and the first three teams have officially confirmed their spots in the knockout stage. Royal Challengers Bengaluru became the first side to qualify after defeating Punjab Kings by 23 runs. Later, Sunrisers Hyderabad sealed their playoff berth with a five-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings, which also confirmed qualification for Gujarat Titans.
RCB currently sit at the top of the points table with 18 points from 13 matches and a healthy net run rate of +1.065. The defending champions are now eyeing a top-two finish, which would give them two chances to reach the final. Their last league game against SRH on May 22 in Hyderabad could decide who finishes in the top two. GT and SRH, both on 16 points, are also firmly in the race for Qualifier 1.
Punjab Kings, meanwhile, have seen their campaign collapse dramatically. After beginning the season with seven consecutive wins, PBKS are now on a six-match losing streak. Shreyas Iyer’s side can still mathematically qualify, but they need multiple results to go their way apart from beating Lucknow Super Giants in their final game. Their chances remain slim.
Rajasthan Royals are still alive in the playoff race with 12 points from 11 matches. They must win both remaining games to control their destiny. A single defeat could leave them depending heavily on other teams’ results and net run rate calculations. Delhi Capitals and CSK also remain mathematically alive, but both teams need several favorable outcomes to sneak into the top four.
For Kolkata Knight Riders, the situation is equally difficult. Kolkata Knight Riders can still reach a maximum of 15 points if they win their remaining games, but even that may not be enough. They need RR to lose and PBKS to drop points as well. On the other hand, Mumbai Indians and LSG have officially been eliminated from playoff contention after poor campaigns.
Mumbai’s season has been particularly disappointing despite boasting a strong squad on paper. Hardik Pandya’s side managed only four wins in 12 games and never really found consistency. LSG’s campaign also ended in frustration, with the team unable to recover after a series of close defeats during the middle phase of the tournament.
The IPL playoff system rewards the top two teams heavily. Qualifier 1 is played between the first and second-placed teams, with the winner going directly to the final. The loser still gets another opportunity in Qualifier 2. Meanwhile, the Eliminator is played between the third and fourth-placed sides, where the losing team is knocked out immediately.
That makes the race for the top two extremely important. At the moment, RCB, GT, and SRH are battling for those prized positions, while PBKS, RR, CSK, DC, and KKR are simply trying to survive and stay in contention until the final league matches.
With only a handful of games left, every match now carries massive significance. Net run rate, head-to-head records, and pressure handling could all decide which teams make it through to the playoffs and which sides fall short at the final hurdle. Fans can expect an intense finish to the IPL 2026 league stage.
