Aiden Markram Leaves Manchester Super Giants, Jos Buttler Named Captain for The Hundred 2026- IPL

Aiden Markram Leaves Manchester Super Giants, Jos Buttler Named Captain for The Hundred 2026Manchester Super Giants have been dealt a huge blow during The Hundred 2026 after captain Aiden Markram left the squad. His departure came just before the team’s sixth league match against Welsh Fire on Wednesday. The timing is a big setback as the Giants are fighting to stay in the race for the knockout stage.

This is not the first time Markram has left a tournament before its end. Earlier this year, the South African batter also exited IPL 2026 because of personal reasons before an important match against Rajasthan Royals. Now, Manchester Super Giants have once again been forced to make changes in the middle of a competition.

Jos Buttler Appointed Captain After Markram’s Exit

The franchise confirmed the news through an official statement on its X account. The team said that Markram had returned to South Africa due to personal reasons. “Aiden Markram has returned to South Africa due to personal reasons,” the franchise announced.

With Markram unavailable, Manchester Super Giants have named Jos Buttler as their captain for the rest of The Hundred 2026. The experienced England wicketkeeper-batter will now lead the side during the final league matches as they try to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Buttler has plenty of leadership experience at the international level. He captained England in 95 One-Day Internationals and won 44 of those matches. He also led the team in 51 T20 Internationals, guiding England to 26 victories. The Giants will now hope his experience helps the team perform better in the remaining games.

The franchise also announced a replacement for Markram. New Zealand all-rounder Michael Bracewell has joined the squad for the rest of the tournament. “Michael Bracewell has been named as Aiden Markram’s replacement for the remainder of The Hundred 2026,” the club confirmed.

Giants Must Win Remaining Matches to Stay Alive

Markram made an important contribution before leaving the tournament. He scored 117 runs in five innings at a strike rate of 127.17 and was one of the team’s better batters. His absence leaves a gap in both the batting order and the leadership group.

Bracewell, however, brings plenty of experience with both bat and ball. In 218 T20 matches, he has scored 3,717 runs and taken 105 wickets. He also arrives with confidence after helping Peshawar Zalmi win the PSL 2026 title, where he scored 190 runs and claimed five wickets in 11 matches.

Manchester Super Giants are currently sixth in the points table with two wins and three defeats from five matches. They still have three league games left against Welsh Fire, Southern Brave and Sunrisers Leeds. The top team in the standings will qualify directly for the final, while the second and third-placed teams will meet in the Eliminator.

The Giants still have a chance of reaching the knockout stage, but they cannot afford any more mistakes. Winning all three remaining matches would take them to 16 points. Even then, they will also need other results to go in their favour if they are to finish in the top three and keep their title hopes alive.
