As Ajit Agarkar has been reappointed as the chairman of India’s senior selection committee for the next year, India would be concentrating on the ODI World Cup scheduled in the year 2027. India, with Agarkar’s guidance as chief selector, has performed exceptionally in various ICC tournaments. The Indian team managed to make it to the finals on four occasions from October 2023 to March 2026 and emerged victorious in three tournaments, two T20 World Cups and one Champions Trophy.
A reliable source at the BCCI revealed that Agarkar had not asked for any tenure extension. According to regulations, any member of the selection committee cannot serve the tenure beyond four years in one committee and five years in total in both junior and senior committees.

A BCCI official said to Indian Express that,
“Under Agarkar’s tenure, the team had a seamless transition and was fearless in taking bold decisions. The board felt he should continue. The BCCI officer bearers will be speaking to him on the sidelines of IPL games to update him,”
Agarkar and the panel have taken some major and daring decisions since their appointment. The retirement of the Test stars like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma as well as gradual retirement of Mohammed Shami from international cricket is part of that.
They have certainly done a strong call by not considering the Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill for the T20 World Cup to be held in 2026, and opting instead for Ishan Kishan, who was in excellent touch and ended up being the second highest scorer for India in the competition.
