The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has yet to secure a new title sponsor for the Indian cricket team’s home matches. Reports suggest that interested companies are backing out due to the high price set by the BCCI for the title sponsorship.
The deadline for submitting bids for the title sponsorship rights ended on August 13. However, it appears that the BCCI did not receive any bids or that the offers received did not meet the board’s expectations. Consequently, the BCCI is currently in discussions with several companies to fill the vacant title sponsorship rights.
BCCI Issued Tender on July 20
The BCCI issued a tender on July 20 for the title sponsorship rights of the Indian team’s home matches. The deadline for purchasing the tender document was set for August 4, and August 5 was designated as the final date for requesting clarifications regarding the tender.
Currently, the title rights for the Indian team’s home matches are held by IDFC First Bank, which pays the BCCI ₹4.2 crores per match. However, for the new deal, the BCCI has set a minimum price of ₹4.75 crores per match.
This increased price seems to be the reason for the declining interest from potential new sponsors.
₹4.75 Crores Price Becomes a Major Hurdle
The new title sponsorship deal is proposed to last for two years. Previously, IDFC First Bank secured a three-year agreement in 2023.
The BCCI estimates that around 35 payment matches could be held in India during the rights period. However, the board clarified that 35 matches are not a guaranteed minimum, and this number may change based on the final match schedule.
| Details | Information |
|---|---|
| Current Title Sponsor | IDFC First Bank |
| Current Payment | ₹4.2 crores per match |
| New Minimum Price | ₹4.75 crores per match |
| New Contract Duration | Two years |
| Estimated Matches | Approximately 35 |
| Deadline for Submitting Bids | August 13 |
According to the new price, the total value of the title rights could be substantial. However, with no bids meeting the BCCI’s expectations, a new sponsor has yet to be confirmed to replace IDFC First Bank.
Discussions with Google Gemini, Spinny, SBI Life
Although a new deal has not yet been finalized, the BCCI is continuing discussions with potential sponsors.
Google Gemini is reportedly one of the companies in talks for the title sponsorship. Spinny and SBI Life are also said to be in discussions with the BCCI.
This means that there is still a possibility for the BCCI to secure a new sponsor through negotiations. However, the ₹4.75 crores per match price remains a key issue in these discussions.
BCCI Also Interested in Other Commercial Rights
Several companies are showing interest in other commercial rights owned by the BCCI. Reports indicate that Group M, ITW, and Sporty Solutions have purchased the tender document related to ITG properties.
A fee of ₹1 lakh has been set for the tender document.
No Clarity on Associate Partner Rights Yet
The BCCI has released a statement specifically requesting quotations for associate partner rights related to its events.
However, the company that secures the title sponsorship rights for the Indian cricket team will not have the opportunity to purchase the associate partner rights simultaneously. Therefore, a final decision on the associate partner rights will be made only after the title sponsor is confirmed.
The deadline for purchasing the document for associate partner rights ended on August 14, with August 16 as the final date for requesting clarifications. Companies can submit their quotations until August 25.
BCCI’s Goal is to Confirm a New Title Sponsor
Currently, the BCCI is primarily focused on confirming a new title sponsor for the Indian cricket team’s home matches.
The newly set minimum price of ₹4.75 crores is proving to be a significant hurdle in negotiations compared to the current rights value. It will be interesting to see whether the BCCI can secure a new sponsor at its determined price or reach any agreement through discussions.
