Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s wedding at Madison Square Garden on July 3 may go down as the most talked-about celebrity event of the decade, but according to one of its guests, the extravagance was mostly on the outside. Country star Brad Paisley, who attended the ceremony alongside his wife Kimberly Williams-Paisley, says what happened inside the arena told a very different story. He spoke to the Associated Press last week, and his account paints a picture most people probably did not expect.

What did Brad Paisley say about Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s wedding?

Paisley did not hold back. “Ironically, one of the least pretentious weddings I’ve ever seen, or ever will see,” he told AP. For a wedding held inside a 20,000-seat arena with roughly 1,000 celebrity guests, that is a remarkable thing to say. But Paisley was clear it was not just the vibe inside that impressed him. It started with the invitation itself.“I took this personally when I got the invite, because in the invite, it said, ‘If you’re getting this, you mean a lot to us,'” he said. The couple did not reveal the venue upfront either. Paisley described the whole lead-up as a deliberate drip of information. “It was really fun to watch the cat-and-mouse game of like, ‘We can tell you roughly where it’s gonna be. We’re not gonna say what building… And here’s the date, and if you’re in, we’ll tell you more.‘ And I went to my wife, I said, ‘Want to go?’ She’s like, ‘Absolutely. We’ve gotta be there.’ So we did it. It was RSVP yes.”Guests reportedly had to leave their phones and smartwatches behind, and non-disclosure agreements were part of the deal too. None of that, Paisley suggested, took anything away from the night. “It meant a lot to be there. It was kind of a big thank you from her to invite us,” he said.

How long have Brad Paisley and Taylor Swift been friends?

The friendship between Paisley and Swift goes back nearly two decades. In 2007, a teenage Swift opened for Paisley on his “Bonfires and Amplifiers” tour, and he has been one of her most consistent public supporters ever since. That history clearly shaped how he felt about receiving an invitation to her wedding. The connection also extended to something more tangible ahead of the big day. Swift and Kelce donated $26 million across 20 charities before the wedding, including The Store, the Nashville-based free grocery nonprofit that Brad and Kimberly co-founded. Paisley’s response said everything. “On the eve of the wedding of Tay and Trav, this is really an amazing thing to think about, the gift they gave The Store,” he said in an Instagram video. “It’s transformative. It will feed so many families, and what a way to start a marriage.”In a joint statement to People, the couple added, “We’re truly inspired by Taylor and Travis’s generosity to so many wonderful organizations, and extremely grateful that The Store is included among them.”
