The police investigation against England pace bowler Brydon Carse, which began after he was arrested from a nightclub in Derby, has been closed with no charges laid against the pacer.
For context, Carse, who was expected to link up with the England team after his appearance for Durham in the County Championship on August 20, was seen being escorted out of a nightclub by four police officers in a video that made the rounds on social media. He was arrested on alleged assault charges, which have now been dropped.
Carse’s investigation by Cricket Regulator
Shortly after, the ECB confirmed that Carse’s case was referred to the Independent Cricket Regulator and, meanwhile, the pacer would be out of the side for the duration of the investigation. This saw him miss the Pakistan Test series as well as being named in the ongoing Sri Lanka series.
“An investigation into reports of an assault in Derby city centre has been closed.
“Officers attended Molly Malone’s in the Wardwick, Derby, in the early hours of Sunday, 23 August.
“A man was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly and was then de-arrested after his details were taken by officers.”
He was let go shortly after his arrest, though the investigation continued. Carse played two games for Durham following that incident, but missed their ongoing round’s game against Worcestershire, being “unwell” as confirmed by the county.
With the police investigation closed now, Carse will now be investigated by the Cricket Regulator, the timeline of whose investigation remains uncertain, which means so does Carse’s chances of playing Pakistan and Sri Lanka in the tri-series next month.
England players miss Tests after incidents
The incident took place mere days after England’s new captain Joe Root lifted the nighttime curfew from his team, expecting them to behave like “grown adults” in the absence of any restrictions.
Carse is the third English cricketer this summer to miss a Test while under investigation for an alcohol-related incident. Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson previously broke team protocols by staying out past midnight after the first Test at Lord’s against New Zealand in June. The two players ended up at a Chelsea nightclub where a rugby player attacked Atkinson. The aftermath of this particular incident had a lot to do with Stokes’ eventual retirement from cricket.
