Cummins Leads 16-Player Team- IPL

Australia Announce Test Squad for South Africa 2026: Cummins Leads 16-Player TeamAustralia have announced a 16-player squad for next month’s three-match ICC World Test Championship series against South Africa. The series will begin in Durban on October 9. The series will be Australia’s first Test meeting with South Africa since last year’s World Test Championship Final at Lord’s. The matches will be important in the race to qualify for next year’s final at The Oval, according to the ICC.

Australia have picked all their experienced fast bowlers for the tour. One of the main talking points is the inclusion of Marnus Labuschagne, who has struggled for runs in recent Tests. Labuschagne has not scored a century since July 2023. Since the start of 2023, he has averaged below 30 in 22 matches. The right-hander will get another chance to find his form in South Africa.

The batting group also features Travis Head, Matthew Renshaw, Steve Smith and Cooper Connolly. All-rounders Cameron Green and Beau Webster have also been included for the three-Test series.

Three New Additions

Australia have added three players who were not part of the squad for the recent home series against Bangladesh. Connolly, Matthew Kuhnemann and Michael Neser have been brought in to provide extra options for the conditions in South Africa.

Chair of Selectors George Bailey said the squad was picked with the tight schedule and different playing conditions in mind. “This is a reasonably condensed three-game series, on the back of six one-day internationals, with only short breaks between each game,” George Bailey said, as quoted by the ICC. “The squad provides balance and options for each Test and the variety of conditions we may face.”

Australia Return to South Africa

It is the first Test tour for Australia to South Africa since the series played in 2018. Only five players in the current squad have previously travelled to the country as part of an Australian Test touring party. The names of those five cricketers are Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc, Steve Smith, and Matthew Renshaw.

Australia are currently top of the World Test Championship table, with defending champions South Africa in second place. Australia come into the series after drawing 1-1 with Bangladesh earlier this month. The three Tests in South Africa will be important for both teams as they push for a place in the 2027 World Test Championship final at The Oval. The series starts in Durban on October 9.
