DEHRADUN: A 26-year-old woman from Delhi’s Shahdara area, who went missing on Sunday afternoon during a solo trip to Uttarakhand’s Chopta, was found dead on Monday in a 400 m-deep gorge below Ravan Shila along the Chopta-Tungnath trekking route.Police suspect she slipped and fell while trying to take a photograph.The victim, Pooja Sahni, had left Delhi on Sept 19, telling her family she was going out to look for a job. Instead, she travelled alone and reached Rudraprayag on the morning of Sept 20.When she did not return home, her family filed a missing person complaint at the Welcome police station in Delhi.Rudraprayag police were alerted on Sunday evening that a person may have fallen from a rocky stretch frequently used by tourists and trekkers for photography, according to sub-inspector Manwar Singh.A State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) team launched an initial search near Tungnath temple on Sunday evening, but operations were suspended due to darkness.The search resumed at 7:10 am on Monday, leading to the recovery of Sahni’s body from the gorge. In coordination with District Disaster Response Force (DDRF) and local police, the SDRF team carried the body on a stretcher across three kilometres of difficult terrain back to Chopta.“It appears that she climbed onto the rock to click a picture, lost her balance and fell into the gorge,” SI Singh said, noting that gusty winds were blowing in the area on Sunday evening.Police in Rudraprayag stated that the victim’s family was expected to arrive in Augustmuni by Monday night.Further details regarding her background and the exact circumstances of the fall are under investigation.
