Farhan Akhtar has revealed that persistent fan demand played a major role in taking ‘Mirzapur’ from the streaming space to the big screen. Speaking at the trailer launch of ‘Mirzapur: The Movie’ on Tuesday, he said the film came together largely because audiences never stopped asking for more of the show. According to the India Today report, Farhan Akhtar recalled being asked about ‘Mirzapur’ wherever he travelled, ever since the show’s first season premiered in 2018. He said, “The show is a result of fans’ love. They have supported the show from the time it was first released. Amazon took it across the world. Wherever I went, people used to ask me when ‘Mirzapur’ was coming.”He added that even after the film’s announcement, fans kept asking about its release date. Farhan added, “So it is really the fans that have demanded this movie. We are very happy and grateful to have put it together with the original cast and the amazing new cast.”

Farhan Akhtar also shared a funny memory of writer Puneet Krishna’s first pitch for ‘Mirzapur’, admitting the idea initially left the team confused. “When Puneet came to us for the first time, our first instinct was to refer him to a brain doctor,” he said, laughing. “Then we thought of making it into a show so that people can get into it.”He credited Krishna and director Gurmmeet Singh for shaping the world of ‘Mirzapur’, calling them “the heroes of the show,” while noting that Ritesh Sidhwani, Excel Entertainment and Amazon backed their journey throughout.

After three seasons, the franchise is now set for the big screen with ‘Mirzapur: The Movie’. The trailer brings back Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal, Divyendu and Rasika Dugal in their familiar roles, with Jitendra Kumar joining as Bablu Pandit, a role earlier played by Vikrant Massey.The Gaddi remains central to the story, but new players enter the power struggle as the action expands beyond Purvanchal into the deserts. With old rivalries resurfacing and new claimants joining the fight, the battle for Mirzapur is set to unfold on a much bigger canvas. The film is set to hit theatres on September 4, 2026.
