NEW DELHI: The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) targeted the Centre over the Rs 92.35 crore spent on the upkeep of official residences of Union ministers in 2025-26, saying the money could instead have been used to build government schools.“Stop fixing your lavish homes, and fix the schools!” the CJP said in a social media post, reacting to a news agency PTI report that the annual expenditure on renovation, furnishing and repair of Union ministers’ residences had touched a record high.“Rs 92 crore = 10 new world class government schools. The money is available, the intent to use it for government schools is missing,” the outfit said.According to information obtained by news agency PTI through an RTI query, the government spent Rs 92.35 crore on repair and renovation works at ministers’ official residences in 2025-26, up from Rs 71.98 crore in 2024-25 and Rs 27.47 crore in 2014-15.The CJP’s remarks came as its national working committee is scheduled to meet on Monday to review the Centre’s commitments following the withdrawal of its nationwide agitation on July 25.The outfit has alleged that the government has yet to formally communicate the steps taken to fulfil assurances made during talks, including withdrawal or quashing of FIRs against students and peaceful protesters and compensation for families of NEET-UG candidates who died by suicide after the exam was cancelled following the paper leak controversy.The CJP has warned that any attempt to “dilute, delay, reinterpret or dishonour” the commitments would amount to “vishwasghaat” with the country’s youth and said the possibility of another peaceful nationwide agitation would be considered at Monday’s meeting.(With agency inputs)
