Gerald Coetzee Returns After 2023 World Cup- IPL

Gerald Coetzee is set to return to ODI cricket when South Africa face Australia this month. He has been included in the 16-member squad for the three-match series. Coetzee has not played an ODI since the 2023 World Cup. He has also missed games because of injuries. The fast bowler recently played a four-day match against Bangladesh A to get some match practice.

South Africa already have problems in their pace attack. Kagiso Rabada and Nandre Burger will miss the series. Lutho Sipamla was also ruled out after picking up a hamstring injury during the tri-series in Namibia.

South Africa have also made some changes to their squad. Prenelan Subrayen, Rubin Hermann and Dewald Brevis have been left out from the group that played their last ODI series.

Markram to Miss First ODI

Aiden Markram will not play the opening match. CSA confirmed that he will be available for the second and third ODIs. Tristan Stubbs has returned to the squad. He missed South Africa’s most recent ODI series against India in December. Veteran batter David Miller has also been picked.

The first ODI will take place in Durban on September 24. The second match will be played on September 27, followed by the final game on September 30. It will be South Africa’s first ODI series at home since they hosted Pakistan in December 2024.

Conrad Wants to Build for World Cup

Head coach Shukri Conrad said the series will help South Africa prepare for the World Cup. “With the World Cup just over a year away, this series marks an important step in shaping the squad as we build towards the tournament, while also giving those players who are in the frame opportunities when we face Bangladesh and England later in the season,” Head coach Shukri Conrad said.

“We have a clear idea of the combinations we want and the roles we need players to fulfill.

“From a batting perspective, we’ve looked at making sure we have a middle order that can be explosive but have the ability to absorb pressure and take the innings quite deep. That balance is going to be important for us.

“Unfortunately, Kagiso will miss out on this series due to injury, but his absence creates an opportunity for the other players to step up. It’s great to see Gerald back in the fold and, by all accounts, he’s been bowling nice and quickly.”

Coetzee will be hoping to make the most of his return. South Africa will need their fast bowlers to step up with Rabada and Burger unavailable.
