Glenn Maxwell has retired from international cricket at the age of 38. After stepping away from ODIs in June last year, he has now called time on his T20I career as well as List A and first-class cricket. He will continue playing for Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League, with his contract running until the end of the 2027-28 season.
Glenn Maxwell’s T20I Career And Records
Maxwell scored 2,897 runs in 130 T20Is at a strike rate of over 154. He is Australia’s third-highest run-scorer in the format. His five centuries are the joint-most in T20Is, alongside Rohit Sharma. Speaking on The Final Word podcast, Maxwell said he had been discussing his future with the Australian team management for some time.
“We probably had numerous discussions before and after the T20 World Cup,” he said. “And it was pretty open-ended. There wasn’t any pressure from [Australia team management] and we decided to sort of leave the door open.” He also mentioned Australia’s decision to give younger players opportunities during recent series, including the tour of Bangladesh.
Maxwell Hoped For An MCG Farewell
Australia’s upcoming white-ball tour of England includes a T20I at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Maxwell admitted he had hoped to play one last international match at his home ground. “[There was, I] suppose, a small hope or discussion that I might have been able to potentially get a send-off game at the MCG. But [I] can completely understand the direction they’re going with this squad,” he said.
He understood Australia’s plans to give younger players more opportunities ahead of the 2028 Olympics. Maxwell said a farewell at the MCG would have been special after spending 15 years playing T20 cricket.
Maxwell Focuses On Melbourne Stars
Maxwell will now focus on his fitness and prepare for the next BBL season. He was already planning to have an injection in his knee to help him get ready for the tournament. “The option was there, but I was sort of ready to push the button on getting an injection on my knee to make sure I was ready for the BBL,” he said. He added that retiring from international cricket would give him more time to work on his fitness.
“Eight weeks of solid rehab again to make sure I’m strong and ready for the BBL coming up,” he said. “It’s probably a time where I need to spend a little bit more time investing in the body to make sure I can get through the remaining couple of tournaments I’ve got in my career.”
Maxwell played his final international match against Oman in February. It was Australia’s last game at the T20 World Cup, where they were knocked out in the group stage.
