While talking about his mother, Sean Hepburn Ferrer revealed that his mother was never quite aware of her own stardom and how she never truly understood her own fame. While talking to PEOPLE, Ferrer shared that his mother had wanted to return to her career as a ballerina after the horrors of WW2; however, “it got stolen by lack of nutrition and training during the war.” He added, “I guess she never really expected it to happen the way it did. She always said, ‘I was not a professional actress, and I got a great part.’ In a way, I like to equate it to the definition of real beauty. Is it the person that sits in front of the mirror and primps themselves, or is it really that deer that kneels down and drinks from the creek, then looks up with beautiful eyes and doesn’t know that it’s so graceful and beautiful?” Not only that, but according to Ferrer, his mother always remained humble and down-to-earth and was well aware that her career could take a turn for the worse at any given moment. “I don’t think she ever knew that she was that special, and therefore, she just did the best she could and gave her all.”

During the interview, Ferrer also added that his mother always had a fresh take on her characters and was always learning, which is why she was always refreshing to watch in everything that she did. He added, “Maybe what’s wonderful about the way the cookie crumbled for her was the fact that it was all fresh and in the moment, so there was nothing prepared. It’s so important never to see the technique behind the magic, and I think in her case, because it wasn’t there, all we got was the magic.”Hepburn passed away on January 20, 1993. She was 63 at the time and had been suffering from a rare form of appendiceal cancer. She left for her heavenly abode in her own home in Tolochenaz, Switzerland.
