The International Cricket Council (ICC) has officially confirmed that The Oval in London will host the 2027 ICC World Test Championship (WTC) Final. The title match will be played from June 9 to June 13, 2027, with June 14 kept as a reserve day if bad weather or other interruptions delay play. This will be the second time The Oval hosts the WTC final after successfully staging the 2023 edition.
The Oval previously hosted the 2023 WTC Final, where Australia defeated India by 209 runs to lift their maiden World Test Championship title. Last year, the ICC awarded England the hosting rights for the next three WTC finals in 2027, 2029, and 2031. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) chose The Oval once again after its successful hosting of the 2023 final.
ICC Confirms The Oval as 2027 WTC Final Venue
An ICC official said, “The Oval delivered an outstanding experience in 2023, and we are delighted to return there for the 2027 World Test Championship Final. It is one of the world’s most iconic cricket venues and provides a fitting stage for the biggest match in Test cricket.” The announcement gives players and fans plenty of time to prepare for another historic clash in London.
With less than a year left before the final, the race to qualify has become more exciting. Australia currently lead the WTC standings with a Points Percentage (PCT) of 87.50 after winning seven of their first eight Tests. Defending champions South Africa are second with 75.00 PCT, while New Zealand are third with 72.22 PCT, keeping themselves firmly in the race for the final.
One of the biggest surprises of the current cycle has been Bangladesh. Their impressive 2-0 Test series victory over Pakistan lifted them to fourth place with a 58.33 PCT. If they continue their strong performances, Bangladesh could qualify for their first-ever World Test Championship final, which would be a historic achievement for the team.
India Fifth as WTC Standings Tighten
India, who finished runners-up in both the 2021 and 2023 WTC finals, are currently fifth with a 48.15 PCT after winning four of their nine matches. Sri Lanka are close behind with 41.67 PCT, while England have slipped to 24.36 PCT despite having several home Tests left to play. Pakistan and West Indies are currently at the bottom of the standings and will need a remarkable comeback to stay alive in the qualification race.
Several important Test series over the coming months are expected to reshape the standings. West Indies will host Pakistan in a two-Test series from July 25, while Australia will face Bangladesh in a two-match series starting August 13. India will travel to Sri Lanka for a two-Test series from August 15, and England will host Pakistan in a three-Test series later in August and September. Every match will carry valuable WTC points.
An ECB spokesperson said, “We look forward to welcoming the world’s best Test teams back to The Oval. Every World Test Championship final has created unforgettable moments, and we are confident the 2027 final will be another memorable occasion.” Since the WTC began in 2019, New Zealand (2021), Australia (2023), and South Africa (2025) have all lifted the trophy. The Oval will now host another chapter in Test cricket history as the world’s best team battles for the prestigious WTC mace in June 2027.
