A species once feared lost forever is slowly finding its way back across the American plains. In 1986, just 18 black-footed ferrets remained known to science. Today, roughly 400 are estimated to live in the wild, following decades of captive breeding and reintroduction efforts, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute. The latest sign of that recovery came in May, when six black-footed ferret kits were born at the Smithsonian’s research campus in Front Royal, Virginia. The litter, born to a two-year-old first-time mother named Mizuno, is part of the cooperative recovery programme for one of North America’s most endangered mammals.

From believed extinct to 18 survivors

Black-footed ferrets once ranged widely across the Great Plains, where they depended heavily on prairie dog colonies for food and shelter. But habitat loss, declining prairie dog populations and diseases such as sylvatic plague and canine distemper pushed the species to the brink.By the 1970s, scientists believed the species had disappeared. Then, in 1981, a small colony was discovered near Meeteetse, Wyoming, giving conservationists an unexpected second chance.That population, however, was devastated by disease. By the mid-1980s, only 18 ferrets remained. Wildlife authorities eventually brought the surviving animals into human care between 1986 and 1987, creating the foundation for a captive-breeding programme designed to prevent the species from disappearing altogether. Those 18 animals, seven males and 11 females, became the ancestors of every black-footed ferret alive today, both in human care and in the wild.

A painstaking breeding effort

The Smithsonian joined the cooperative breeding effort in the late 1980s. Since 1989, more than 1,200 black-footed ferret kits have been born at its conservation biology campus, while about 800 Smithsonian-raised ferrets have gone on to reintroduction programmes.The wider USFWS-led programme has involved zoos, wildlife centres and state agencies working together to breed the animals, prepare them for life outside captivity and release them at sites across the species’ former range.Preparation matters. Before release, some ferrets undergo “preconditioning”, learning to navigate burrows and live around prairie dogs. USFWS says research found that ferrets exposed to live prairie dogs before release survived at about three times the rate of those released without that preparation.

The newest generation

The six kits born at the Smithsonian in May are part of that continuing effort. They are being raised by Mizuno in a specially designed den box, with keepers monitoring their health, development and weight.Once they are old enough to live independently, the young ferrets could remain at the facility for future breeding, move to another accredited conservation centre or become candidates for release into the wild. The species is not out of danger. USFWS currently estimates that around 280 black-footed ferrets remain at captive-breeding facilities, while the wild population stands at roughly 400. Disease, the health of prairie dog colonies and the availability of suitable habitat continue to complicate recovery.But the numbers tell a remarkable story: from a population reduced to just 18 animals, generations of breeding and reintroduction have given the black-footed ferret a foothold in the wild again. What was once a species thought to have vanished is now being raised, released and given another chance across the plains.
