India’s tour of Bangladesh scheduled for September 2026 is once again on the verge of being postponed. Bangladesh Cricket Board President Tamim Iqbal indicated on Thursday, August 20, that the dates for India’s tour might be changed. This tour has already been postponed once, and now uncertainty looms over its schedule again.
This series was originally set to take place in August 2025 but was rescheduled to September 2026. In January 2026, the Bangladesh Cricket Board officially announced a six-match series, which includes three ODIs and three T20 internationals.
According to the current schedule, the ODI matches between India and Bangladesh are set to be played on September 1, 3, and 6. Following that, three T20 internationals are scheduled for September 9, 12, and 13. The ODIs and T20 matches are to be held in Dhaka and Chattogram.
However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India has not yet issued any public statement regarding this tour.
Reasons for Possible Changes in India’s Bangladesh Tour Dates
Bangladesh Cricket Board President Tamim Iqbal mentioned that both boards are still in discussions regarding the tour’s schedule and arrangements. Tamim visited India in early August 2026 and also toured the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.
Pressure on the proposed schedule for the September series between India and Bangladesh has increased for two main reasons.
The first reason is the Game Development Trophy tournament taking place in Bangladesh. This is an age-group competition, with all matches scheduled to be held at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur. The tournament is set to take place from August 28 to September 9.
The dates of this tournament directly clash with India’s current schedule. As a result, the Bangladesh Cricket Board may need to adjust the domestic tournament’s schedule.
Tamim Iqbal hinted that if the dates for the India series are finalized, the Game Development Trophy could be moved from Mirpur to the Bashundhara ground.
Afghanistan Series Also Becomes Another Issue
India’s September schedule also includes a series against Afghanistan. Reports suggest that the dates for this series may coincide with the same timeframe.
This busy international schedule for India has further complicated the planning for the Bangladesh tour. Due to the lack of clear confirmation from the Indian cricket board, the Bangladesh Cricket Board is also finding it challenging to finalize its plans.
Tamim Iqbal’s statement indicates that if the series dates between India and Bangladesh are confirmed, Bangladesh is prepared to relocate the domestic tournament. However, there has been no final confirmation from India regarding this tour yet.
Previous Controversy Surrounding India’s Bangladesh Tour
This proposed series between India and Bangladesh has faced scheduling changes before. It was originally supposed to be played in August 2025 but was later postponed to September 2026.
Now, once again, the possibility of changes in the series schedule has emerged. This means that the tour could be postponed for a second time even before a single ball is bowled.
Recent developments between both cricket boards have also complicated the situation. After the announcement of the Bangladesh tour in January 2026, Kolkata Knight Riders recalled Bangladesh’s fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from the IPL.
Subsequently, Bangladesh refused to send its team to the T20 World Cup hosted by India and Sri Lanka. These events have created additional tension in the cricketing relations between the two countries.
Is the India-Bangladesh Series at Risk of Being Canceled?
Currently, there has been no official confirmation regarding the cancellation of the series. Discussions between both boards are ongoing, and the possibility of date changes remains.
The biggest question at this point is whether both boards will be able to agree on new dates within the proposed September timeframe.
If the dates change, considerations for the domestic tournament and India’s other international commitments will also need to be taken into account. So far, there has been no joint official announcement from either India or Bangladesh regarding the series.
