India Coaching Shake-Up? Gautam Gambhir’s Support Staff Could Exit Before Sri Lanka Tests- IPL

India Coaching Shake-Up? Gautam Gambhir's Support Staff Could Exit Before Sri Lanka TestsThe Indian cricket team’s coaching setup could undergo significant changes ahead of the upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka. According to a report by the Times of India, some members of Gautam Gambhir’s support staff are likely to leave the national setup. Interestingly, these potential exits are not believed to be a direct consequence of the recent series defeats to Ireland and England, but rather the result of issues that have been building since India’s home Test series loss to South Africa last year.

The report states that at least one prominent member of India’s support staff is expected to part ways with the team. While the exact reason remains unclear, it is believed that the individual has either grown dissatisfied with the current environment or is set to accept a coaching role elsewhere. Reports suggest that the staff member has already held discussions with an IPL franchise that has a global presence and could soon make the switch. Additionally, the possibility of another support staff member leaving in the near future has not been ruled out.

India’s coaching structure underwent a major overhaul in 2024 after Gautam Gambhir replaced Rahul Dravid as head coach. Ryan ten Doeschate was appointed assistant coach, Morne Morkel took charge as bowling coach, and T Dilip continued as fielding coach. Sitanshu Kotak later joined as batting coach, while Abhishek Nayar initially remained part of the setup before being relieved of his duties following the 2025 Champions Trophy. Nayar subsequently returned to the IPL as Kolkata Knight Riders’ head coach.

Dressing Room Divisions Reportedly Deepen After South Africa Whitewash

Despite the revamped coaching staff, India’s Test performances have come under intense scrutiny. Under Gambhir, the team has suffered back-to-back home Test series defeats, first against New Zealand in 2024 and then against South Africa in 2025. According to the report, the latest whitewash against the Proteas has deepened divisions within the dressing room. It also claims that differences between the coaching staff and the national selectors have further complicated the situation.

Another talking point has been the emergence of VVS Laxman’s name in India’s coaching plans. Earlier reports suggested that the BCCI was considering reviving a split-coaching model, with Laxman accompanying the team on tours to Zimbabwe and the Asian Games, while Gambhir would remain in charge for the home series against the West Indies. However, a senior source has questioned the logic behind such an arrangement.

The report further indicates that Sairaj Bahutale’s appointment as spin-bowling coach may not be a temporary measure. Instead, it could be part of a broader strategy by the BCCI as it evaluates alternative coaching options amid the expected staff changes. The board is also believed to be conducting a comprehensive review of both the players and the coaching staff following India’s disappointing performances in Europe.

A high-placed source expressed doubts over the reported coaching plans, saying, “I don’t quite understand the need to send VVS Laxman to Zimbabwe. I also do not understand the plan to send him for the Asian Games. There is clearly more than meets the eye, and perhaps the Indian cricket board is exploring options.” With uncertainty surrounding the support staff and fresh reviews underway, India’s coaching setup could witness another reshuffle in the coming weeks.
