Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are once again looking at Hardik Pandya as they search for a new captain following Ajinkya Rahane’s retirement. The franchise is interested in bringing the Mumbai Indians (MI) all-rounder to Kolkata ahead of IPL 2027.
Pandya has had a difficult second stint with MI, but his ability to lead a team remains one of his biggest strengths. He also brings valuable experience as an all-rounder. However, his fitness is still a concern, as he has not played a match since the last IPL.
KKR Yet To Agree On MI’s Trade Demands
The deadline for franchises to submit their retentions ahead of the December 16 mini-auction in Goa is November 15. The trading window will close a week before the auction, reopen a week later and remain open until one month before the IPL begins.
Sources told The Telegraph that KKR were initially not too keen on Pandya after their first round of discussions with MI. His injury concerns were the main reason behind their hesitation.
Despite that, KKR’s management continues to value his leadership and tactical skills. Pandya proved his ability as a captain when he guided Gujarat Titans to the IPL title in their first season in 2022.
The biggest problem is MI’s demands. KKR are not willing to release Sunil Narine or Varun Chakravarthy. Rinku Singh is also among the players they want to keep.
Cameron Green could have been another option, but his availability for most of the IPL is uncertain. Australia have the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in January-February, followed by a five-Test Ashes series in England.
MI Eye Harshit Rana And Angkrish Raghuvanshi
MI are understood to be asking for Harshit Rana and Angkrish Raghuvanshi in return for Pandya. The Mumbai franchise are looking for an Indian wicketkeeper, and Raghuvanshi could solve that problem.
The 22-year-old has been among the runs in domestic cricket and is considered a promising batting talent. However, letting him go will not be an easy decision for KKR, especially with his mentor Abhishek Nayar now in charge as head coach.
The two franchises have not reached an agreement yet. Discussions are expected to continue this week before a final decision is made.
MI have also explored possible moves for Rajasthan Royals’ Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ravi Bishnoi. Those talks have not moved forward much. The franchise are also looking for an Indian spinner, making Bishnoi a suitable option.
Adding Raghuvanshi or Jaiswal would also bring a Mumbai player into the MI squad. Either trade could still happen before IPL 2027.
CSK Also In The Race For Hardik Pandya
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have not completely given up on the idea of signing Pandya. They showed interest earlier, but one major issue is that they cannot offer him the captaincy.
MI have reportedly shown interest in young CSK batter Ayush Mhatre. However, Chennai have made it clear that they are not willing to release him. Shivam Dube and another bowler could be considered in a possible deal.
CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan has denied that any discussions have taken place over the trade.
MI are keen to complete the Pandya deal before the mini-auction. KKR could be the most suitable option because the move may also give Pandya the captaincy he wants.
However, everything could depend on Raghuvanshi. If KKR are unwilling to release the youngster, the deal could become difficult. MI also want to settle their retention plans before entering the auction.
