Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg once had an unusual message for his young daughter after taking her to a Taylor Swift concert: she could admire the pop star, but she could not simply choose to become her. In a clip going viral on the internet, Mark Zuckerberg recalled the conversation with his daughter August Chan Zuckerberg on the Acquired podcast, saying the then-7-year-old told him she wanted to be like Swift when she grew up. In the video, Zuckerberg said that he told her that option was not available to her. August, however, quickly turned the conversation into her own ambition, saying she wanted people to want to be like her when she grew up.

What did Mark Zuckerberg tell his daughter about Taylor Swift

Mark Zuckerberg said he had taken August to a Taylor Swift concert. After the show, she told him she wanted to be like the singer when she became an adult.“One day my daughter, we took her to a Taylor Swift concert, and she was like, ‘You know, Dad, I kind of want to be like Taylor Swift when I grow up,’” Zuckerberg said. His response was direct. “I was like, ‘But you can’t, that’s not available to you.’”The conversation took place sometime in 2024, when August was around seven years old.

Rather than being discouraged, August came up with a different goal. “She thought about it and she’s like, ‘All right, when I grow up, I want people to want to be like August Chan Zuckerberg,’” Zuckerberg recalled. Her response appeared to please her father.“And I was like, ‘Hell yeah!’” he said.

Mark Zuckerberg’s daughter can’t vibe code products “open to the internet”

August has also been exploring technology on her own. In a profile of Priscilla Chan and Zuckerberg, Chan showed journalist Jeremy Stern some of her daughter’s creations on Replit, a platform used for coding. Priscilla Chan said her daughter had created projects including a messaging app and apps similar to GeoCities and FarmVille. The projects also included marketing and sales plans. However, Chan said she limits what her daughters can make available online. “She’s quite limited, because Mom doesn’t let her build things that are open to the internet,” Chan said.“She wanted to build a dating site,” Chan said. “That was a no.”Mark Zuckerberg had previously said in 2024 that one of his daughters was 40 pages into writing a novel about “mermaid crystals” with AI-generated images. Chan also stressed that the coding projects were not something Zuckerberg had pushed his daughter to do.“He didn’t tell her to do any of this,” Chan said. “It’s been all on her own,” she added.
