England and India will face each other in the second ODI of the three-match series at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff on Tuesday, July 16. India go into the match with a 1-0 lead after securing a comfortable six-wicket victory with 28 balls to spare in the opening ODI at Edgbaston. England’s loss also marked their 13th defeat in 19 ODI matches since the start of 2025.
While India started the series on a winning note, the first ODI also highlighted a few areas that need improvement. The biggest concern was captain Shubman Gill, who looked in good touch before he had to leave the field after scoring 80 runs due to visible discomfort. The Indian team will be hoping that the issue was only cramps and not a serious injury.
India will be particularly cautious because Gill suffered a similar problem during the first Test against South Africa in Kolkata last year, which led to his hospitalization and ruled him out of the rest of that series. With Gill playing a key role as both captain and opening batter, the Men in Blue will be eager to have him fully fit for the remainder of the England series.

England vs India, 2nd ODI: Key Players to Watch
Jos Buttler (England)
Jos Buttler has an excellent ODI record at Cardiff. He has scored 6 fifties in 10 innings, with a highest score of 91 not out. He averages 63 at this venue, showing how comfortable he is on this ground. If Buttler gets through the early overs, he has a strong chance of scoring 40 or more runs and leading England’s batting.
Virat Kohli (India)
Virat Kohli managed only 5 runs in the first ODI, but his record against England remains outstanding. In 39 ODIs, he has scored 3 centuries and 10 fifties. Cardiff is also a happy hunting ground for him, with one hundred and one fifty in four innings. If Kohli settles in after the powerplay, he is capable of scoring 50+ runs.
Joe Root (England)
Joe Root once again proved why he is England’s most dependable ODI batter with a patient 76 in the first match. He has an impressive record against India, scoring 3 centuries and 5 fifties in ODIs. Root enjoys building long innings, and if he survives the early spell, he could go on to score 70 or more runs.
Shubman Gill (India)
Shubman Gill continued his excellent form against England with a classy 80 in the first ODI. In just five ODI innings against England, he has already scored one century and three fifties, averaging 87. Gill has looked confident at the top of the order, and another score of 70+ would not be a surprise if he gets a good start.
Harry Brook (England)
Harry Brook had a brilliant T20I series but could not make an impact in the opening ODI. However, he has an excellent record in Cardiff, scoring 2 centuries and one fifty in 13 ODI innings at the venue since 2025. Brook is an aggressive batter, and if he spends some time at the crease, he can easily score 50 or more.
Axar Patel (India)
Axar Patel was the Player of the Match in the first ODI after delivering a superb all-round performance. He picked up 4 wickets and remained unbeaten on 57 to guide India to victory. His confidence will be high heading into the second ODI, and he is expected to contribute with both bat and ball. Another 2 wickets and 25+ runs could be on the cards.
Adil Rashid (England)
Adil Rashid went wicketless in the first ODI, but his recent ODI numbers remain impressive. Since 2025, he has taken 27 wickets in 13 ODIs, while at Cardiff he has claimed 14 wickets in just 7 matches. Rashid has troubled Indian batters in the past, and he will be aiming to bounce back with at least two wickets in the second ODI.
