Mayank Yadav is set to return to the Indian T20I squad for the first time since October 2024 after being named in the team for the upcoming three-match series against Zimbabwe. The tearaway pacer has endured a difficult few years due to recurring injuries that have repeatedly interrupted his progress. After making his comeback in IPL 2026 with Lucknow Super Giants, where he played five matches, the selectors have once again shown faith in the young speedster.
According to PTI, the selection committee headed by Ajit Agarkar has declared Mayank fit for T20 cricket and wants to give him an extended run in the series. The move is similar to the opportunity handed to Gurnoor Brar during the Afghanistan series, with the management keen to assess Mayank over multiple matches rather than a single outing. However, questions remain over his fitness, limited game time, and his ability to consistently bowl at the 150 kmph mark.
Mayank’s International Journey: Bright Debut, Frequent Setbacks
Since the beginning of 2026, Mayank has featured in only six T20 matches, including two warm-up games before the T20 World Cup and four IPL appearances for Lucknow Super Giants. His returns have been modest, with just four wickets during this period. He also struggled for rhythm in IPL 2026, conceding more than 50 runs in three of his four bowling innings while failing to pick up a wicket in those games.
Mayank last represented India in the T20I series against Bangladesh in October 2024, where he made an impressive international debut by claiming four wickets in three matches. However, an injury shortly after the series forced him out of action for several months. He returned during IPL 2025 but managed only two matches before another setback sidelined him once again.
The fast bowler’s career has been plagued by injuries. A torn hamstring ruled him out for the entire 2023 season, while a side strain ended his breakthrough campaign in 2024 after consecutive Player of the Match performances. Soon after his India debut, he suffered a lumbar stress injury in his lower back, and a brief IPL 2025 comeback lasted just two matches before the problem resurfaced. In mid-2025, Mayank underwent surgery on his L5 vertebra in Christchurch as part of his rehabilitation process.
With Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana rested and Prasidh Krishna omitted from the squad, Mayank has a golden opportunity to cement his place in India’s T20I setup. He is expected to lead the pace attack alongside Prince Yadav and Ashok Sharma during the Zimbabwe series. A strong performance, coupled with sustained fitness, could significantly boost his chances of becoming a regular in India’s white-ball plans, but his biggest challenge remains staying injury-free throughout the assignment.
