Pakistan’s selector, Misbah ul Haq, has his own formula for players to succeed, and that is as time-tested as it gets. Misbah, who has also led Pakistan cricket through one of its golden eras in Test cricket, urged players to value discipline and consistency as they gear up for upcoming Test tours against West Indies and England.
“Talent can take a player to a certain level, but discipline and consistency are the most important qualities for long-term success,” he was quoted as saying.
Pakistan’s worst in Tests
Pakistan are currently going through one of their woeful phases across formats but particularly in Test cricket. They were whitewashed by Bangladesh 2-0 the last time they played a Test game and are currently at the bottom of the World Test Championship (WTC).
And these troubles are hardly new for them. They were also the wooden spooners in the previous WTC cycle, winning only five of their 14 red-ball games.
Such results, with such consistency, can only stem from a rot that has set in deep. For Misbah, the predicament can only get better with players intentionally sticking to their routine.
“A successful player continues to do what is required, even when he does not feel motivated. Whether it is training, fitness, practice or diet, he must follow the routine five or six days a week. The player who consistently repeats the right habits will improve and sustain his performance.”
Coaches and mentors have a job to do
Playing the sport loved and owned by a good part of a country doesn’t always seem all that glamorous. Young players hardly ever get the room to find their footing. The scrutiny is intense as is, more so when results are unfavourable.
Amidst all this, Misbah wants coaches and mentors to make sure the players remember why they started in this sport in the first place.
“Support young players, facilitate their development and give them responsibility, but do not impose decisions that may take away their passion for the sport,” he urged coaches and mentors.
