All-rounder Mohammad Nawaz’s time in Pakistan’s domestic National Champions Cup has been cut short as he picked up a finger injury on Wednesday. Representing Pakistan Gold in the four-team competition, Nawaz hurt his finger while fielding against Pakistan Blues. While he was able to complete his full spell, he seemed to be in discomfort.
How did the injury happen?
The scans the following day confirmed the injury, which forced him out of action for a minimum of three weeks. Consequently, Nawaz was not part of Gold’s Friday fixture, which they lost by 128 runs against Pakistan Greens.
“Left-arm spinner Mohammad Nawaz has been ruled out of the [National Champions Cup] after sustaining an injury to his right middle finger, it was confirmed on Friday,” the PCB said in a press release.
“Nawaz was taken for scans on Thursday, 13 August, which confirmed a fracture to the finger, ruling him out of action for a minimum of three weeks.
“He picked up the injury while fielding for his team [Pakistan Gold] in their 12 August fixture against [Pakistan Blues]. He did complete his quota of 10 overs in the game which Gold lost by six wickets at the Multan Cricket Stadium.”
Gold eliminated with a game to spare
His team, Gold, were eliminated from the tournament following the defeat, which was their second in as many games. They are set to play their final fixture on August 16 but with no route to the final remaining, Nawaz is unlikely to feature.
Having missed the opening game for his National Champions Cup side, this was Nawaz’s first game of the tournament. Besides the injury, he also had to endure a tough outing. He conceded 44 runs in ten wicketless overs and scored only eight runs before that.
The spin all-rounder came fresh off his second Lanka Premier League stint, where he played for Galle Gallants, who won the tournament by defeating Jaffna Kings in the final. Nawaz took seven wickets for the side in 11 games and scored 86 runs at an average of 14.
