Nag Ashwin’s mythological sci-fi epic ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ released in 2024 became a huge hit crossing the Rs 1000 crore mark. The film achieved critical and financial success, opening doors for filmmakers to explore the genre which the director believes. Recently, he called it only the “beginning” and has big potential.Nag Ashwin told IANS that Indian mythology has several ideas that can work well with science fiction, including time, immortality, destruction, rebirth and advanced worlds.

Asked if he believes only a small part of this potential has been explored, Nag Ashwin said, “Yes, I think Kalki 2898 AD is only the beginning. There is a lot of potential within our mythology and the worlds and ideas that come from it.”
‘Kalki 2898 AD’ gave the industry confidence
Nag Ashwin also believes the success of ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ has given the Indian film industry more confidence to invest in ambitious projects.He said the film showed that a large-scale story based on Indian mythology and science fiction could connect with audiences and succeed commercially.“The film has also given financial confidence that something like this can be pulled off successfully. And I think that is the first step towards actors and producers feeling confident enough to greenlight projects that explore these ideas and genres further,” he said.The makers are now working on the sequel and are currently in the production stage. The same agency earlier reported that regular shooting for ‘Kalki 2898 AD Part 2’ will begin in October 2026.
About ‘Kalki 2898 AD’
Talking about the film part, the film is set in a dystopian future in 2898 AD, the story follows a group trying to protect SUM-80’s unborn child, who is believed to be Kalki, the final incarnation of Vishnu. The film stars Prabhas, Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan and Disha Patani among others.However, Deepika Padukone won’t be seen in the second part as she and the makers parted ways.

Speaking of its recent honours, ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ recently received the Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment and Best Special Effects at the 72nd National Film Awards.
