Pakistan clinch Plate title after defeating Oman in Hong Kong SixesHong Kong Sixes defending champions Pakistan have ended their campaign with a Plate title after defeating Oman in a high-scoring clash. The side could not get into the main title race after enduring a defeat at the hands of the UAE, which saw them fighting Oman for the Plate title.

Pakistan ended fifth overall, having won the Plate final. The Plate is played by all second-placed teams across their groups, which included Hong Kong, Sri Lanka and Oman. Pakistan got past Hong Kong in the semi-final. Earlier, Oman had handed Sri Lanka a defeat, while Sri Lanka had also been defeated by Hong Kong. This placed Oman and Pakistan in the Plate final.

Pakistan’s opening-day defeat against UAE

Pakistan had a day of ups-and-downs in the opening day at the Hong Kong Sixes, where they suffered a defeat in a final-ball thriller against UAE and then went on to beat India with four wickets to spare, picking up their first two points.

The six-a-side tournament began on October 30, with Pakistan scheduled to play their group members, UAE and India. Batting first against UAE, the title-defenders set a 106-run target on the back of an 18-ball, 68-run partnership between captain Abbas Afridi and Abdul Samad. The total, however, proved to be insufficient as the UAE gunned it down on the last ball.

Pakistan bounce back against India

Pakistan were more careful against India as the bowlers were miserable in conceding runs. India could only reach 88 runs with Shashank Singh scoring a 14-ball 40, while none of the other batters could cross the 20-run mark.

Pakistan made quick work of the chase, taking only 3.5 overs to chase it down. Khawaja Nafay and Abbas Afridi scored 59 off 14 balls between them as the side cruised steadily towards the win.

With two defeats in as many games, India were eliminated, while Pakistan and UAE progressed to the semi-finals. Pakistan faced Hong Kong in the Plate semi-final, while UAE took on Australia in the main semi-final.

The overall title was won by Afghanistan, who lifted their maiden trophy by going past Australia.
