Paul Wesley, the renowned actor who played Stefan Salvatore in ‘The Vampire Diaries,’ opened up about his cat-and-mouse bonding with co-star Nina Dobrev. While they played the predestined couple on-screen that fans like to call ‘Stelena,’ the couple had a rocky relationship off-screen. In hindsight, the 43-year-old admitted that his grumpy disposition might have contributed to their bond. Here’s a close look at Paul Wesley’s bond with Nina Dobrev that evolved over the years.
Paul Wesley takes responsibility for gympy bond with Nina Dobrev
Paul Wesley took responsibility for the tension-filled relationship between him and Nina Dobrev from the beginning. “I will take a lot of responsibility because I was a bit of a curmudgeon, grumpy, pain in the a**,” he said during a podcast interview with ‘Call Her Daddy’ with Alex Cooper, before adding, “I was like, ‘I’m taking my acting seriously.’” While there was never hate between them, the intense conflicts stayed in their presence. As for other cast members, they were all ‘chill.’“It was nine other guys and me,” Wesley recalled about the audition round before signing the beloved series, and added, “I remember all these guys were kind of kissing her ass. I just was like, ‘I’m not going to look at her. I’m not even going to acknowledge her ’cause I want to meet her in the audition. I want to meet her for the first time in the audition.’ ‘Cause our scene was us meeting for the first time.”Despite his broody behaviour, the chemistry between the two led the popular series for years. “We were these two characters, and it just was magical. So regardless of us not getting along, it somehow clicked,” he stated, adding that their private feud never interfered with their profession.
Paul Wesley and Nina Dobrev: The evermore bond
When Nina Dobrev said goodbye to the series after Season 6, Paul Wesley jested that she was going to miss him. “You know what, Nina? You’re gonna miss me one day,” he claimed to her, to which she had said, “Maybe.” When the cast reunited for the series finale in 2016, Nina admitted to him that she indeed missed having him around – and so did Wesley. The iconic duo is set to star together again in the suspense novel adaptation ‘You Deserve to Know.’
