Peshawar Zalmi really just turned the tables for themselves in one game after handing Karachi Kings the biggest defeat in the league’s history. In doing so, they ended Karachi’s unbeaten streak and are now the only team to have no defeats next to their name. What’s more is that the 159-run win gave them a significant Net Run Rate (NRR) boost, which saw them climb up to the second spot, with a better NRR than the remaining teams.
Earlier that day, Islamabad United’s nine-wicket win over Lahore Qalandars had brought them to second place. But with Zalmi’s win, they have dropped to third position, with Multan Sultans still the table-toppers.
Peshawar’s Iftikhar Ahmed has been central to their two back-to-back wins. In two games, the all-rounder took seven wickets and is now the tournament’s second-highest wicket-taker. His teammate Sufiyan Muqeem has also joined him on the list after taking a three-fer against Karachi.
Besides the bowlers, Zalmi’s batters Babar Azam and Kusal Mendis have also sneaked into the elite group. Both batters were wreckers-in-chief with the bat against Karachi, as Mendis managed 109 off 52 and Babar went unbeaten with 87 off 51 balls. Currently, the Zalmi captain has the best average in the league among the top ten run-scorers.
