Sri Lanka spinner Prabath Jayasuriya has become the third player to face an ICC sanction for an incident during the second ICC World Test Championship match between Sri Lanka and India.
Jayasuriya was found guilty of breaching Article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel. The rule covers the abuse of cricket equipment, clothing, ground equipment, fixtures or fittings during an international match. The Sri Lanka spinner received an official reprimand for the offence. One demerit point has also been added to his disciplinary record. It was Jayasuriya’s first offence during a 24-month period.
Incident After Jayasuriya’s Dismissal
The incident took place after Jayasuriya was dismissed with the final delivery of the day on Monday, August 24. While walking back to the pavilion, he struck the boundary wedges with his bat. Jayasuriya admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by match referee Andy Pycroft. The matter was settled without the need for a formal hearing.
The charge was brought by on-field umpires Ahsan Raza and Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid. Third umpire Rod Tucker and fourth umpire Prageeth Rambukwella also levelled the charge against the Sri Lankan spinner.
Third Player Sanctioned in Colombo
Jayasuriya is now the third player from the Colombo Test to receive an ICC sanction. India batter Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sri Lanka fast bowler Asitha Fernando were previously punished for their involvement in an incident on the opening day.
Jaiswal and Fernando were each handed a 25% match-fee penalty. Both players also received one demerit point on their disciplinary records. The earlier incident happened during the 17th over of India’s first innings. Fernando dismissed Jaiswal during the over, after which the India batter walked towards the Sri Lankan bowler.
Jaiswal and Fernando exchanged words before Fernando moved his head towards the India batter. Jaiswal then leaned in, which resulted in their heads making contact. The incident led to sanctions for both players.
