Robert Downey Jr says Doctor Doom is stronger than Thanos; Marvel aims to ‘earn your trust’ with Avengers Doomsday

Hollywood actor Robert Downey Jr just gave Marvel fans a thrilling glimpse into the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s next era, promising a villain that will completely redefine the franchise. The Oscar winner made a surprise appearance alongside directors Joe and Anthony Russo at a special SXSW 2026 screening of Avengers: Infinity War, quickly shifting the spotlight toward his highly anticipated turn as Doctor Doom in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday.

As the crowd erupted, Robert leaned into the moment’s nostalgia, jokingly reminding everyone of his massive character pivot. “Hi, I used to play Tony [Stark] and then you lost me right after this one,” he joked.

Marvel is not trying to recreate Infinity War and Endgame

The momentum behind Avengers: Doomsday is building fast, but Robert Downey Jr isn’t trying to out-muscle the ghosts of Marvel’s past. Rather than trying to top Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, the team is choosing to start fresh.

Speaking frankly about the massive narrative hurdle ahead for Marvel Studios, Robert, as reported by ComicBookMovie, explained their strategy, “We can’t beat it, we can’t stand on the shoulders of these giants of Infinity War and Endgame, so we’re literally zeroing out the board, and we’re gonna try to earn your trust and respect all over again, and with the likes of these fellows, I think we got a pretty good shot.”

Doctor Doom or Thanos? RDJ settles the debate

During a major highlight of the event, director Joe Russo finally put a voice to a debate that Marvel fans have been losing their minds over for years. When asked to choose the ultimate powerhouse between Thanos and Victor Von Doom, Robert didn’t even blink before declaring, Doctor Doom.

While Thanos relies heavily on his sheer physical brutality, armies, and cosmic artefacts like the Infinity Gauntlet, Doctor Doom operates on a completely different level. He is a psychological nightmare who perfectly bridges the gap between hyper-advanced sci-fi technology and ancient, dark sorcery.

In the original Marvel comics, Doom has consistently outsmarted gods, stolen the powers of cosmic entities, and proven that absolute brilliance, mixed with magic, makes him far more dangerous than a cosmic warlord.

A crossover event unlike anything Marvel has attempted

Set for release on December 18, Avengers: Doomsday is officially bridging the gap between legacy heroes and a brand-new wave of protectors. With longtime Marvel collaborator Stephen McFeely writing the screenplay and Kevin Feige producing, the ensemble includes beloved MCU veterans, bringing back Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Winston Duke, Tom Hiddleston, Sebastian Stan, Letitia Wright, Paul Rudd, and Robert to lead the charge against the franchise’s newest threats.

At the exact same time, the film is injecting fresh energy into the team dynamics. Wyatt Russell, Simu Liu, Tenoch Huerta Mejia, Mabel Cadena, Florence Pugh, Danny Ramirez, David Harbour, Hannah John-Kamen, Lewis Pullman, India Rose Hemsworth, and Wesley Holloway all make their Avengers franchise debut.
