Roblox founder David Baszucki and his wife turn their son's struggle with bipolar disorder into a $20 million grant for a Massachusetts hospital to study whether diet-based therapies can improve mental health

Roblox founder David Baszucki and his wife, Jan Ellison Baszucki, have turned their family’s personal journey with their son’s bipolar disorder into a major philanthropic investment in mental health research. Through their family foundation, Baszucki Group, the couple has awarded a $20 million grant to McLean Hospital to establish the McLean Center for Metabolic Psychiatry. This Massachusetts-based facility will explore whether targeted nutritional and metabolic therapies, such as ketogenic diets, can improve psychiatric symptoms and brain function in patients living with severe mental illnesses.McLean Hospital, a member of the Mass General Brigham healthcare network and a primary psychiatric teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School, announced that the centre will act as the international flagship for the newly established Global Network for the Advancement of Metabolic Psychiatry (MetPsy). The grant will also fund clinical education and physician training initiatives coordinated jointly by McLean and MH² – a clinical practice, education and training hub.

What is Metabolic Psychiatry

Metabolic psychiatry investigates the relationship between systemic metabolism, cellular energy, brain function and mental health. While clinical neurologists have prescribed metabolic interventions, most notably the ketogenic diet, to control pediatric epilepsy for more than a century, applying these concepts to psychiatric conditions is a rapidly developing frontier.Over the past decade, an expanding volume of scientific research has indicated that metabolic therapies can positively affect both physical biomarkers and clinical psychiatric symptoms in patients diagnosed with conditions such as bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder and schizophrenia. To translate discoveries into everyday medical practice, the center will build out evidence-based clinical protocols and provider training curricula.

Funding inspired by family’s recovery

For the Baszucki family, the funding is directly tied to their lived experience supporting their son, Matthew, through his diagnosis and treatment of bipolar disorder. Jan Ellison Baszucki, co-founder of Baszucki Group, emphasized that the personal recovery of their son through metabolic interventions inspired them to build a formal global movement around the science.“The launch of MetPsy reflects our family’s commitment to continuing to advance the field of metabolic psychiatry worldwide. As this network grows, we hope fellow funders will join us in expanding access to evidence-based metabolic interventions—a clinical approach that has restored the health and future of our son Matthew, and offers that same hope to many more,” Jan Ellison Baszucki said.To prevent clinical findings from remaining siloed, the center will anchor the MetPsy network, which connects scientists, physicians and mental health clinicians across the globe.
